Origins of project Mediterranean mountains are becoming increasingly marginal areas of Europe of tomorrow, in a geographical or social problems, economic, demographic and ecological combine. They are also an inexhaustible reservoir of vital resources for the regions of lower altitude and the surrounding city, but the sustainability of its resources is highly challenging both in the North than in the southern Mediterranean.
Participants
The project brought together nine partners from Spain, France, Italy and Greece.
Project goals
The project was MEDIMONT thereby better understand the process of desertification in Mediterranean mountains through the natural and human conditions, and provide possible guidelines and recommendations for adequate development of its surroundings.
Working approach At the local level multidisciplinary studies including social economic, and ecological (terrestrial and aquatic) were conducted in 5 pilot areas in Andalusia, Corsica, Basilicata, Calabria and in Crete. They were placed in a broader context with four additional investigations at the regional level to deal with the history of vegetation, studies on climate change, development of macroeconomic scenarios and test capabilities perceptions remote technical to identify potential indicators of desertification.
